Combatting stress and sleep issues with Chinese medicine

Combatting stress and sleep issues with Chinese medicine

Zanolife • Feb 02, 2021
As the authorities have implemented strict measures to fight the spread of COVID 19, the fallout has seen people lose their jobs and incomes and experience greater isolation, with "social distancing" becoming the catchphrase of the last 13 months. Many of us are stressed out and sleeping less.

At Zanolife we have reached out to various of our medical and wellness partners to understand their different approaches to treating stress and poor sleep.

This month we have reached out to TCM practitioner, Edmund Sin Ho Meng. Edmund is Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioner with over 7 years in the industry. Following graduation from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he spent over 6 years with the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

In 2020, he took the bold move to strike out on his own and open up his own practise in Kennedy Town.

The Zanolife Blog spoke to Edmund about his practise and the role of TCM in combatting the fallout from COVID 19 including the rise in insomnia, stress and anxiety in the population.

Zanolife Blog (ZB): What is TCM?
Edmund Sin (ES): TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a medical theory that can be traced back to the Han Dynasty, around 200 BC. However, it has continued to evolve and develop over time.

ZB: What are some of the most ancient forms or areas of TCM?
ES: Acupuncture and herbal medicine are two of the most ancient treatments in TCM based on TCM medical theory.

ZB: What areas of TCM do you practise?
ES: I offer TCM medication (herbal tea), acupuncture, Tui-Na (Medical Massage), bone setting, fire cupping therapy in my clinic. Many of my patients are here for different kinds of acute or chronic pain problems, as well as general health issues like common flu, coughs, digestive system problems, skin concerns and also insomnia.

ZB: What are some of the main issues that people consult TCM specialists for?
ES: Pain management such as lower back pain; neck & shoulder pain; headache issues; skin problems like acne and eczema; digestive system problems such as abdominal bloating; heartburn; diarrhoea and constipation. TCM is also very effective in treating the common flu. Most people think western medicine is a faster treatment against the flu, but with the right TCM prescription it can be just as effective.

ZB: The ongoing COVID crisis is being linked to a rise in stress and anxiety globally and is impacting the sleep of many people. What can TCM do for people with stress and / or poor sleep?
ES: TCM actually is quite effective in treating insomnia, through medication and acupuncture. From the perspective of TCM, insomnia and stress are mainly related to our liver and heart. TCM treatment focuses on restoring the balance of these two organs. TCM seeks to treat the liver to help nourish and calm the mind for the easing of potential symptoms of depression. Also, TCM can assist to ease any potential side effects in those who have taken anti-depressants or sleeping pills over a long period of time.
