Height, Weight, Blood Pressure & BMI Measurement

BMI
Body Bass Index

An active lifestyle and healthy diet are important in order to maintain a state of good health, particularly as we grow older. A simple Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement is an effective way of understanding if your lifestyle and surroundings are putting your body and wellbeing under stress. BMI readings outside of the normal range provide an indication of potential future health issues.

Hectic schedules, lack of exercise, poor sleep patterns and certain other lifestyle choices put stress on your body, which can in turn have a negative impact on your state of health. For example, you may have high blood pressure (hypertension) for a long period of time without any symptoms. Understanding blood pressure and having knowledge of your own personal level is important as prolonged and uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of both stroke and heart attack.

Waist / Hip Ratio (WHR)
Excess abdominal fat is associated with a number of conditions including type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, high triglycerides & high blood pressure, as well as coronary disease and some forms of cancer.

Waist & hip measurements can be recorded and the waist to hip ratio (WHR) calculated. A high WHR is an indication of excess abdominal fat - referred to as "abdominal obesity". According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), abdominal obesity is defined as WHR above 0.90 for males and above 0.85 for females. Excess abdominal fat is associated with a number of conditions including type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol, high triglycerides & high blood pressure, as well as coronary disease and some forms of cancer. The WHO STEPS protocol for measuring waist circumference instructs that the measurement be made at the approximate midpoint between the lower margin of the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest, while the hip circumference measurement should be taken around the widest portion of the buttocks.
