Examination of stool to detect signs of bacterial infection or parasitic infestation or bleeding.
Stool test for fecal occult blood - also referred to as a fecal occult blood test (FOBT). If this test detects the presence of blood in the stool it may be an early indication of colorectal disease, including colon cancer, or polyps in the colon or rectum. If blood is detected through a FOBT, additional tests may be needed to determine the source of the bleeding as this test is only able to detect the presence or absence of blood and not the precise source of the bleeding.
