A blood test for calcium and phosphorus is used to monitor musculoskeletal health. However, out-of-normal-range readings can indicate a number of further underlying health conditions such as with the heart and kidneys.
Phosphorus levels are closely related to calcium levels. Phosphorus combines with calcium to form calcium phosphate, which is a component of calcium in bone. Its determination in blood helps to understand the calcium content of bone and their health. Close to 90% of the phosphorus in the body is found in our bones in the form of hydroxyapatite. As well as helping to indicate musculoskeletal health, registering low or high levels of phosphorus in your bloodstream can indicate a number of health conditions including kidney disorders.
