Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) is an enzyme in the body, primarily found in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. The test is carried out to assess damage to tissue in the brain, muscle or heart. Where there is tissue damage, creatine phosphokinase leaks from tissue into the blood. This test can diagnose damage to the heart, as well as other muscle damage and dystrophy.
